Crewel work is a traditional form of embroidery, using woolen yarn, which has been in use for about 5 centuries. Mave Glenny explains the fascinating history of the craft and sets out the basic steps involved, offering special advice on use of colour and backgrounds to offset the embroidery. Each project has a colour photograph of the finished piece, a pattern indicating the stitches used and clear written instructions which include details of thread colours.
