Participants in this workshop will learn the principals of combining knitting and crochet together in a freeform, multidirectional manner. Different techniques, stitches and motifs that work well for this style of designing will be studied and tried. By discovering ways of crocheting onto knitting and knitting directly into crochet, the best techniques for combining stitches and joining pieces together will be discussed and experimented with. Students will learn how to keep their freeform swatches flat and flexible, thus enabling even their earliest experimental work to be easily incorporated into a future wearable garment, accessory or unique home furnishing.
Handout sheets will be provided for each participant, detailing patterns for each of the stitches and motifs covered, together with a page of tips and hints for future successful freeforming. There will also be a variety of finished freeform garments, samples and swatches for study and inspiration.
Participants should have at least basic prior skills in both knitting and crochet.
Participants should think about the range of colours with which they wish to work, and bring along a variety of yarns in that colour scheme. The selection can include left over yarns and threads, and odd balls. It is recommended students bring at least 12 different yarns in complementary colours in any thickness or fiber combination. Scissors, crochet hooks and a variety of different sized knitting needles should also be brought to the workshop. Stadia Handcrafts will have yarns and accessories available for sale.
